Nonlinear Constitutive Modeling of Viscoelastic Foams: Application to Impact Protection

Basic understanding of the mechanics of viscoelastic foams is important to inform the development of protective equipment using this promising material.  Our modeling efforts seek to develop a strain-rate dependent, large deformation, compressible model in the framework of a ABAQUS user-element implementation that in predictive across various loading modalities.  Large deformation uniaxial tension and compression testing at five decades of strain rate using Fast Iterative Digital Image Correlation measure strain are the primary means used to inform model development.  Models are assembled and compared via testing multiaxial inhomogeneous states of strain in computational and experimental settings.
