Investigating the Neuroprotective Effects of Hypothermia using a 3D Neuronal in-vitro Model
The potential benefit of transient applications of hypothermic temperatures after traumatic brain injuries has long been debated in the literature. Although many animal and some human studies have reported beneficial outcomes, the effects of hypothermia on a fundamental, cellular scale is still unknown. By utilizing a custom-built, in vitro TBI impact device and 3D imaging tools, this project carves the way to a deeper understanding at the cellular level.
Single neuron (green) in collagen (magenta fibers).
Representative controls: maximum intensity projected confocal micrographs showing neurons in collagen. Live neurons are shown in green, stained by calcein AM. Dead cell nuclei are shown in red, stained by ethedium homodimer-1.
